Who Are You Really

Apr 12, 2026    Pastor John Greer

This powerful message challenges us to examine the foundation of our identity and asks a crucial question: are we defining ourselves by our feelings, our past mistakes, or by what God's Word declares about us? We discover that we are three-part beings—spirit, soul, and body—created in God's image. The transformative truth of 1 Thessalonians 5:23 reminds us that God desires to sanctify us completely in all three dimensions. When we accept Christ, something miraculous happens: our spirit becomes brand new, just like Jesus. As 2 Corinthians 5:17 declares, we become new creations where old things pass away. Yet here's the tension we all face—we can be legally free but mentally bound, still living according to old patterns and beliefs. The Israelites who were physically freed from Egyptian slavery continued to think and act like slaves in the wilderness. Similarly, we often continue identifying with our past struggles, failures, and limitations rather than embracing our new identity in Christ. This message calls us to walk by faith, not by sight, recognizing that what we believe about ourselves drives our behavior. When we truly grasp that God sees us through the lens of Christ's perfection—covered by His blood and righteousness—everything changes. We're challenged to pay attention to our internal dialogue, catch ourselves when we speak defeat, and intentionally replace those words with God's truth about who we really are.
